Samsung has been pushing their phones in the Indian market for a long time now, but most of their models have always had something missing. Take, for example, the E880: a really compact phone which still includes a 1 megapixel camera, MP3 player, 80mb memory, Bluetooth and all that jazz. What’s missing? FM radio and a card slot. The more recent super-slim X820 also had all the aforementioned features, but again lacked an FM radio and a memory card slot. Even their higher end models such as the slim slider, the Ultra Edition 1.9 (D900), lacked an FM radio tuner in spite of being so expensive. This has been a problem for Samsung. Other competing brands have something in the sweet spot (the mid-range) – the Sony Ericsson Z550i, the Nokia 6085 and the LG KG300 Dynamite. Go a little higher and you get the new Nokia 6300 or the Sony Ericsson K550i. These phones are all-in-one and don’t cost too much. Samsung has nothing in this range.

It’s this problem that Samsung is trying to tackle with the new E250. The E250 is a very inexpensive all-in-one phone. It looks very stylish and only costs Rs. 7,000. Will the E250 revive Samsung’s performance in the lower mid-range segment alongside The Nokia 6085 and the Sony Ericsson Z550i? Let’s find out.

The E250 is also one of the first three phones that Samsung has launched with security features such as Mobile Tracker, Emergency SOS alert and Privacy lock. We’ll talk about those later.

Design
The E250 looks almost exactly like the D900 which costs more than twice as much. It’s surprising why Samsung would want to do this – it’s one thing to give budget buyers an excellent looking phone and it’s a completely different thing to actually clone the design of the highest end phone in your catalog and sell it for cheap. D900 owners are upset because now every average to mid-range buyer can now consider upgrading to a phone that looks like it costs Rs. 18,000.

The E250 looks hot. It’s slim, it’s stylish and it’s a slider. In fact, the E250 is the only slider phone that looks this good and sells for this price. Compared to the 6085 and the Z550i, the E250 clearly stands out. Unlike other low-end slider phones, the E250 has a spring-loaded slider, so you just need to nudge it up or down and it does the rest by itself. The little ridge right below the screen (which facilitates sliding the phone open) is a little too flat in the E250, making it a little difficult to use. You’ll be better off sliding the phone up by holding its sides. The sliding construct, however, feels solid and has very, very little play. It won’t break easily.

Buttons and ports on the E250 have been kept to a minimum. There’s a microSD card slot on the left side and a headset/charger port on the right side. Combining ports saves space, but because of this, you won’t be able to use the headset to listen to music or the radio while you’re recharging the phone. On the left, there is also the volume rocker. There is no shortcut to launch the camera or music player, other than the navigation pad shortcuts, which are configurable.
The phone comes in three colors – silver, black and a relatively uncommon pink. The silver one looks fine, but the black is the real deal. Don’t get me started with pink!

In fact, we make as much of a personal statement with the mobile phones that we carry or the televisions we have in our living rooms as we do with the shoes and bags we wear or the furnishings we chose to place in our homes. These are all lifestyle decisions, where design and performance are the criteria. Samsung has successfully anticipated the growing role for consumer electronics in our lives, while recognising the importance of self-expression in the development of its products.”

Geesung Choi, President of Samsung Electronics said: “Today’s mobile phone manufacturers no longer just sell mobile phones, but sell more than the product itself - a slice of life and culture. We truly believe that our approach with Giorgio Armani is one step closer to our customers to enrich their lives with sophisticated style and cutting-edge technology. Samsung i450 is the new Samsung 3G-enabled phone which is a dual slider running on Symbian OS.

This handset presents a two way slider design which is almost same as Nokia N95. However, Samsung i450 is much more slimmer than N95 (21mm, 120gram), coming with only 11.8 mm thick and only light 95 gram weight. The lightweight 3G capable handset and the compact dimensions of the handset make it easy for the user to carry in their pocket and on the palm.

This new slider features a 2.3 inch colour TFT display, displaying up to 262000 colours on the high 320 x 240 pixels resolution screen.

Samsung’s Samsung i450 addresses the needs of the growing consumer segment, which demonstrates mobile and music to come hand in hand. The Samsung i450 combines extensive music player capabilities with super sound quality highlighted by ICEpower® amplifier developed by Bang & Olufsen®. It features a dedicated music interface to make navigation and listening easier, and to store more music, the phone offers 35MB internal memory and microSD™ slot which is expandable up to 4GB. Moreover, 2.4″ large LCD screen offers convenient multimedia mobile experiences including MP3 player, a 2 megapixel primary camera with flash and a VGA camera for video calling.

Samsung SGH-G600

The latest handset to join Samsung's stylish sliderphone line-up is unashamedly image conscious. However, the G600 is all about its photographic features rather than its flash looks, being one of a few mobiles to boast a five-megapixel camera.

Samsung has decided to roll out its first European 5Mp mobile without 3G - it's a quad-band GSM/GPRS/Edge phone, so there’s no video calling or high-speed surfing and downloads to waste the day with. As well as the headline-grabbing camera, there's a digital music player and FM radio to keep you entertained, and Samsung is throwing in a 1GB Micro SD memory card - to go with 55MB of built-in storage - along with a set of stereo headphones and a Samsung WEP 310 Bluetooth headset.

The G600 clearly looks like it's a member of the Samsung phone family, albeit in an understated, elegant kind of way. It has a similar feature set to the swanky Ultra II Series U600, but does away with the touch-sensitive controls that look great but can make handling awkward.

Not that the G600's design would immediately give you a clue to the camera power within. It's a fraction under 15mm thick, so no bulging camera biceps to give the game away. There's no Cyber-shot phone-cum-camera style tip-offs either. When shut, the G600 looks like a regular sliderphone with a reassuringly solid feel about it. The camera is only revealed when the slider is slipped open, with the 5Mp autofocus lens and LED flash rising from the rear casing.

Hiding it away is no doubt good for keeping the G600's lens free from wear and tear. It does mean though you have to slip open the phone any time you want to take a snap. A camera button on the side activates the shooter rapidly, and controls appear on the screen in landscape mode. With the keypad open, though, it's not quite as easy-snapping as some turn-and-shoot digital camera-style phones. Still, the G600 does have a stunning display as a viewfinder, with 2.2in of 320 x 240 resolution presenting up to 16m colours.

Anyone with a grasp of sliderphone basics will easily get to grips with the G600's controls. As well as the usual pattern of softkeys, call, end and cancel buttons, there's a large iPod-like disc at the front. Unlike Samsung's X830 music phone, this sadly doesn't spin you through the menus with iPod-like elan. It's simply a standard five-way navigation joypad, as found on plenty of other Samsungs. It can be used for shortcuts to key features, and users can reconfigure the default settings easily from within the phone's Settings sub-menu.

Slide down the... er... slider, and you find a keypad reassuringly professional feel. No cluttered, over-complicated layout here – the keys are large, easy to read and well-spaced, with two silver strips separating the columns with functional elegance. Even large fingered users will be pleased tapping out messages or numbers with the responsive keys.

Menu navigation is a pretty standard Samsung affair, though presented in an attractive interface with large, clear icons and labeling as you click through the settings. There are plenty of configuration options including several menu themes to choose from, and you can set your own shortcuts to favourite features for a My Menu option, accessed in one-click from the joypad.

Initially, when you switch on, you get a dynamic screen display that shows a regional landmark - Big Ben in London in our case - which gets cloudy if the signal is weak and switches to a nighttime shot in the evening. Of course, you can switch this to a selection of supplied wallpapers, download your own or use your own snaps.
